Caiquetios Indians or the Arawak were the first inhabitants of Aruba. They came from Orinoco Basin in South America. Due to terrorization of the vicious Caribs they were force to migrate. More or less town names found around the Aruba islands are proof of the existence of Arawak tribes many years ago. The towns namely Andicurri, Bushiri, Camacuri, Guadirikiri and Turibana were taken from the tribe’s chiefs and warriors. Remnants of their culture were also found like earthenware, pottery and other artifacts in different parts of the islands. They can be viewed at the Archaeological Museum in Oranjestad, Historical Museums of Aruba at fort Zoutman and in a lighthouse known as Willem III Toren.

It was in 1636 when Aruba was taken by the Dutch. For almost two centuries they remained under the control of the Dutch. It was in 1805 during the Napoleonic wars when the British have power over Aruba but was later

returned under the Dutch control

The opening of a crude oil trans shipment facility in 1924 and the opening of an oil refinery in l928 brought prosperity to Aruba. The closing of the oil refinery l985 give way to tourism industry during the last decades of the 20th century. Aruba vacations or Tourism became Aruba’s most important industry for the Aruban’s enjoyed a high employment rate. Aruba was considered as the “Las Vegas of the Caribbean” during that time.

It was in l986 when Aruba breaks away from the Netherlands Antilles and turned into autonomous member of the Kingdom of Netherlands under the Dutch crown.
